History of MB-trac Tractors

The MB-trac brand-short for Mercedes-Benz Traktor-was a line of specialized agricultural tractors produced by the Daimler-Benz Group (later Mercedes-Benz). In 1969, the first prototype was built at the Gaggenau plant. Based on Unimog technology, it combined all-wheel drive with a centrally positioned driver’s cab, providing improved visibility and ergonomics. The official debut took place in May 1972 at the DLG agricultural trade fair, where the MB-trac 65/70 (440 series) was unveiled-a tractor delivering 65–70 hp, powered by a diesel engine and equipped with a hydraulic drivetrain. Series production began in July 1973, a milestone celebrated in 2023 as the brand’s 50th anniversary.
Throughout the 1970s, the brand developed rapidly. In 1974, more powerful models such as the MB-trac 700 and 800 were introduced, offering up to 80 hp and advanced hydraulic systems for operating agricultural implements. These tractors were designed for demanding work in fields, forests, and on slopes, thanks to their even 50/50 weight distribution and strong off-road capabilities.
By the mid-1980s, MB-trac tractors had reached the height of their popularity. Higher-output models were launched, including the MB-trac 1000, 1300, and the flagship MB-trac 1800 Intercooler with up to 180 hp. These tractors featured turbocharged engines, air-conditioned cabs, and electronic control systems-innovations that were cutting-edge in agriculture at the time. Production spanned 18 years, with approximately 41,000 units manufactured in total.
In 1991, Mercedes-Benz decided to discontinue production of the MB-trac due to changes in the agricultural sector, increasing competition, and a strategic focus on other segments such as trucks and Unimogs. The production line was sold to the company Werner, which continued manufacturing under the WF-Trac brand, but without the Mercedes-Benz logo. Final models, such as the MB-trac 1600, marked the end of an era for these distinctive tractors.
