Valtra was derived from the Valmet, Bolinder, Munktell and Volvo brands. Bolinder-Munktell merged with Volvo in 1950 to form BM Volvo. In 1979 BM Volvo formed a partnership with Valmet, and the tractors produced were branded Volvo BM Valmet. After Volvo bought out its share, the name was shortened to Valmet. In 2001 Partek bought Valmet, and the tractors were renamed Valtra Valmet and later the name was shortened to Valtra.
